With all the wet weather we’ve been having, the herbs Josh planted on our balcony have gone mad – huge lovely sweet-smelling bushes.
The delicate white flowers of our coriander mean that we shall soon have to replant as once they have gone to see they will die. We will collect the seeds for next time.
I’m personally not that fond of the taste of coriander, but today I will use it to flavour my carrot and orange soup and for my Rogan Josh curry next week. Jane told me she adds fresh grated ginger to her carrot and orange soup – it certainly gives it a zing – so it’s part of my recipe now
We have two kinds of thyme – the variegated thyme is in flower – and we have both curly and flat-leaved parsley.
We mainly plant herbs bought in the supermarket but every now and again Josh scours the garden shops for more interesting varieties.
In the autumn, I pick big bunches and freeze them in little pots for when they have died back.
Yes, yes – it’s another cookbook. I saw it on our last visit to the Lakeland store and found it irresistible.
I bought a spiralizer a while ago when my vegetarian grand-daughter said it was all the rage, but other than spiralizing s courgette to add to a green salad and a carrot to add to my chicken soup, my spiralizer had languished in the cupboard.
However, looking through the Spiralizer Cookbook on display in Lakeland, there were so many appetising-looking recipes. Lots of them are low calorie and will help in my fight against putting on weight. It’s hard if you enjoy cooking.
So far I’ve only made the Celeriac Remoulade but I must try Catherine Atkinson’s spiralized potato cake and potato latkes. I shall certainly be looking at some of her other cookbooks.

When I finished my second house job I was five months pregnant. I was unlikely to find a part-time temporary job in medicine and I couldn’t face the thought of standing all day in a dental practice, though it would have been much easier to find a locum dental appointment. I decided to take a cookery course instead. At that time, I could cook omelettes and minestrone, but not much else. Only the girls in the lower streams at school did cookery and my mother had always shooed me away.
‘Food is rationed,’ she’d say. ‘Don’t want you wasting good food. Time enough to learn to cook when you get married.’
Like all my friends who cook regularly and don’t buy takeaways, I already have too many cookbooks but the two published by Sainsbury’s were irresistible.
At the end of a big shop at their Kensington branch, Josh bought Volume 1 and I’ve already cooked three of the recipes, including these delicious Chicken Rolls. This week I went back to buy Volume 2. For some reason they are not on the Sainsbury’s website and when I phoned the branch they said they hadn’t any – but they did and I bought one!!
Before cooking them, I cut some of the chicken-filled puff pastry rolls into 7cm lengths to have with gravy, Boulangiere potatoes (from the cookbook) and flat beans. The rest I cut into these little 4cm lengths to have as snacks instead of sausage rolls.
